5 Ways to Promote Your Trades Business in Ireland

Cork Web Design

Trades businesses are the heart of any economy and represent the physical work that has to get done for society to continue functioning.

But trades businesses often start as simple operations or one man bands where every business function falls on the owner operator.

Until the business starts to get a little bit bigger and the owner needs to start looking at bringing in some outside help.

The two functions that most people look to as the first hires are marketing or promotion and the accounting side of the business.

Push and Pull Marketing

Push Marketing

When it comes to marketing, there are two distinct flavours, push and pull marketing.

Push marketing is where somebody knows deep down that they have a want or an issue, but they don’t know of any good solutions.

This is where social media comes in, when a landscaper or attic conversion specialist shows off their amazing work on TikTok or Instagram.

The viewer sees it and realises, “That’s exactly what I need”, and they DM the business on TikTok and arrange to get a free quote.

It’s great because it scales endlessly. Once your marketing is good, you can get an unlimited amount of potential customers reaching out to you.

Pull Marketing

A person wakes up and realises that their roof has collapsed and there is heavy rain leaking into their bedroom.

They quickly Google search for an emergency roof repair service, pick up the phone and give them a call.

The customer knows exactly what their problem is and searches out the best company to come and fix their issue.

The reality is that most businesses will fall somewhere in the middle, but when it comes to promotion it is worth thinking about whether your business is predominantly push or pull.

Push businesses will benefit from TikTok, Instagram and Facebook Ads, while pull businesses will rely more heavily on websites, SEO and Google Ads.

At Marketing For Trades, we work primarily with the pull side of the marketing equation, but more and more companies are incorporating a push element these days as well.

1. A Professional Website

It is a bit of a toss up between having a professional website and having a fully optimised Google Maps profile.

The website is the only platform that you actually own and it is the foundation for all your SEO and Google Ads activity.

It will also be the place where your potential clients go to see if you are actually a professional outfit and whether you have taken the time to build a solid website.

A premium, polished website is the best way to promote your trades business by showing who you are, the services you offer, and pictures, videos and content of the work you have done.

2. Google Maps

This is the single biggest free lever in Ireland and most trades leave it half finished. When somebody searches “plumber Cork” or “roofer near me”, the three businesses in the map pack get the calls. The ones below it mostly do not.

What actually moves it: the right primary category, your real service area rather than a 200km radius, photos of your own jobs added every week, and posts. Profiles that get fresh photos and activity outrank profiles that sit still. It costs nothing but ten minutes a week.

3. Ask Every Customer for a Review

This is the most effective way you can grow your business. A large number of positive reviews will show the potential customer that you are ready to serve them with quality work.

We know that reviews are hard to ask for and get, but if you can develop a system to get Google reviews, it can have a massive impact on your company’s promotion.

Reviews do two jobs at once. They lift you in the map pack, and they close the customer who is looking at three quotes and cannot tell the difference.

The only system that works is asking at the right moment, which is when the job is finished and the customer is happy, face to face, with a link ready to send. Not a week later by email. A business with 40 reviews beats one with 4 every time, and the gap compounds.

4. Google Ads on the Jobs That Actually Pay

Search ads put you above the map pack from day one, which matters when you are starting out and not ranking yet.

The mistake is running one campaign for everything. Split it by the work you want. If emergency callouts pay better than quotes for extensions, put the budget there. Send the clicks to a page about that specific service, not your homepage. And track calls properly, because without conversion tracking you are guessing about which half of the budget is working.

Done right, a trades campaign in Ireland can land a lead for €15 to €40 depending on the trade.

5. Facebook Groups and Google Business Profile Updates

Ireland is small and the community Facebook pages are genuinely powerful. A before and after set from a real job, posted in the right local group, does more for a trades business here than any amount of generic advertising.

For the discretionary work in particular, driveways, landscaping, bathrooms, extensions, people need to see it to want it. Photograph every job. It costs you thirty seconds and it becomes the content that fills your diary for the next two years.

6. Bonus Point: Social Media and TikTok

Social media like TikTok and Instagram are becoming more and more effective at teaming you up with your target customers.

Especially true if you are running more of a push business than a pull business.

Know who your target customer is and how you can get them to become a paying customer of your business.
